Stockwell Stories

About

Welcome to the online blog for the Stockwell oral history project. The idea behind this scheme is to record, collate and then share the many varied social history stories that can be found within Stockwell.

Maybe you were born in Stockwell and have strong memories of the area whilst growing up; or perhaps you moved to Stockwell and feel a strong affinity with the location and the community. Or perhaps you want to share your observations as to how Stockwell has changed over the years.

The Stockwell oral history project would be interested in hearing from you to help share your story. We aren’t limited to just oral histories either; we are keen to uncover any old photographs of Stockwell that you may be willing to share.

The idea is that any stories will be recorded, and then collated for an exhibition at the Stockwell Resource Centre, as well as touring other local venues. The content will also be placed within the Lambeth Archive for future generations to explore.

This site will serve as the online resource for the Stockwell oral history project. We hope to publish here as many of the recordings as possible, with a little biographical detail about the authors.

This project can only work with the valued help of the local community. We would greatly welcome anyone with Stockwell connections to come forward to tell us their own Stockwell story. We are also looking for volunteers who may interested in helping us to record and document this information.

Feel free to drop into the Stockwell Community Resource Centre at 1 Studley Road for further information. You can also call David Clarke on 020 7501 2592, or use the online contact form on this site.

Stockwell is a rapidly changing area, experiencing a tremendous boom in growth in recent years. We need to understand a little more of our proud past, in order for the future generations of Stockwell to continue to participate within the community.

Please come forward and become involved in this project.
